Shigeru Uchida (born in 1943) studied at the prestigious Kuwasawa Design School and founded Uchida Design Studio at the beginning of his career. Uchida has cooperated with several leading clients, including Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto. In 1981, he started Studio 80 with Toru Nishioka.
Shigeru Uchida and Pastoe began working together in 1988. Japanese and Dutch design both distinguished themselves through modesty and an eye for detail, expressed in the objects created jointly by Uchida and Pastoe. This cooperation resulted in Horizontals, Horizontals A-line and Matrix System.
